Parents,
One commonly overlooked area of player development is WATCHing the game
of soccer. Kids can pick up a lot by watching professionals and
international level players play.
The 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup just got underway with the defending
champion Germany beating Argentina 11:0 The US Women's Team, currently
ranked #1 in the world, begin their group play tomorrow and are expected
to compete for the championship.
Since the tournament is in China, most matches will be carried live on
ESPN or ESPN2 at 5AM or 8AM. But they will also be showing the matches
via tape delay in the evenings. So try to catch a few matches which are
sure to be exciting.
Here are the TV listings so far:
9/11 USA v Korea 5AM(live) - ESPN2, 5PM - ESPNCL, 7PM - ESPN2
9/14 USA v Sweden 5AM(live) - ESPN, 5PM - ESPNCL, 3AM 9/15 - ESPN
9/18 USA v Nigeria 8AM (live) - ESPN, 5PM - ESPNCL, 11PM - ESPN2
The quarterfinals will be held on 9/22 and the USA will possibly face
Germany, England, Japan, or Argentina. The quarterfinals will be on
ESPN2 at 5AM and 8AM, though it may shift networks depending where the
US ends up out of group play. ESPN will be carrying a number of other
World Cup matches so check their schedule if you have a DVR!
While this is going on there is still a lot of soccer going on
elsewhere. The MLS season is wrapping up and the English Premiership
League just got their season underway. At the same time, European
national teams are playing in many Euro 2008 qualification matches
throughout September.
